Mindfulness in Law Reading Excerpts

Mindfulness is a collection of insights and practices oriented around paying attention to what is actually taking place in the present moment.


Recognizing that the mind is prone to distraction, and often that distraction can lead to counterproductive conduct and agitated states of mind and body, mindfulness practices help train the mind on an object of attention, notice when the mind moves off into distraction, and learn to return awareness to the object of attention.


One benefit is that we begin to catch the distracted mind sooner and are better equipped to reclaim focus and concentration. Also, the mind wanders less often and we are less likely to get lost in distraction.  As a result, emotional reactivity arises less frequently and is easier to regulate.


Research is finding that mindfulness practices are helpful with working with anxiety and depression, substance abuse, immune function, cardiovascular disease, and general wellbeing.
